University of Sunderland Students Collaborate with Neuthread to Tackle Textile Waste in Sustainable Fashion
Fashion students at the University of Sunderland have joined forces with Teesside-based sustainable fashion brand Neuthread to combat textile waste. Neuthread, an initiative by Stockton charity Daisy Chain, works towards transforming textile waste into high-fashion clothing. In a collaboration spanning five months, students utilized fabric offcuts destined for landfill to create a collection of clothing.

The pieces are currently on display in an exhibition at the University’s Priestman Building on City Campus, running until March 6. Following the exhibition, Daisy Chain will select the best garments to be featured and sold at Neuthread.
Cárá Baumann, Senior Corporate Partnership, Events, and Design Manager at Daisy Chain, emphasized the significance of supporting students in understanding the challenges of textile waste.
Neuthread, which breathes new life into discarded fabrics, aims to address the issue of textiles ending up as waste. The collaboration not only raises awareness but also equips students with skills that can contribute to sustainable practices in the fashion industry.
Diianeira Zympouloki, one of the participating students, expressed her newfound understanding of reusing textiles and the impact of textiles waste. Laura Middlemass, Sustainability Manager at the University of Sunderland, emphasized the crucial role universities play in imparting sustainability skills to future generations.
Jayne Smith, the University’s Programme Leader for Fashion Design and Promotion, highlighted the significance of instilling sustainability practices as an integral part of the curriculum.
Neuthread, initiated with funding from The National Lottery Community Fund, is making strides in the realm of sustainable fashion, thanks to collaborations fostering environmental responsibility among emerging designers.
