Pakistan’s textile industry is experiencing a significant uptick as the country’s garment exports to China witnessed a notable 3% increase throughout the year 2023. According to Ghulam Qadir, the Commercial Counsellor at the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing, the rise in exports is attributed to the strong demand for Pakistani textiles in the Chinese market, underpinned by the quality and competitive pricing of Pakistani men’s and women’s clothing.

The appeal of Pakistani garments in China has been on the rise, bolstered by the reputation for quality and cost-effectiveness. This surge in demand is also facilitated by Pakistan’s competitive advantage in land trade with China and the zero tariffs established under the Free Trade Agreement between the two nations. The symbiotic trade relationship has contributed to the flourishing export of men’s and women’s clothing.

In 2023, Pakistani men’s garment exports to China reached an impressive $28.66 million, showcasing the robust demand for men’s apparel. Simultaneously, women’s garment exports from Pakistan to China experienced a remarkable 11% increase, reaching $10.46 million compared to $9.44 million in the same period the previous year. The cumulative exports of men’s and women’s garments surpassed $39.12 million, registering a commendable 3% growth.

Highlighting Pakistan’s commitment to furthering textile trade, Ghulam Qadir pointed out the successful TEXPO 2023, the largest textile exhibition held in Karachi. The event attracted around 120 representatives from China’s top textile enterprises, resulting in the signing of multi-million-dollar contracts. This strategic initiative underscored the collaborative efforts between the two nations to strengthen economic ties and foster sustained growth in the textile sector.

The positive trajectory of Pakistan’s garment exports to China in 2023 reflects the resilience and attractiveness of the country’s textile industry. As demand continues to grow, driven by factors such as quality, competitive pricing, and favorable trade agreements, Pakistan stands poised for further success in catering to the evolving needs of the Chinese market. The TEXPO 2023 exhibition further exemplifies the proactive approach adopted by Pakistan to capitalize on collaborative opportunities and propel its textile sector to new heights.
