Singapore Faces Urgent Call for 260,000 Skilled Workers Amidst Booming Economy

Singapore Seeks 260,000 Foreign Workers to Fill Skills Shortage

The country’s economy is booming, but it lacks the domestic talent to meet demand.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said in a statement that Singapore needs to recruit an additional 260,000 foreign workers over the next five years to meet its manpower needs. The ministry said that the country will need to focus on attracting skilled workers in areas such as information technology, engineering, and healthcare.

“The demand for skilled workers is outpacing the supply,” said the MOM. “We need to attract more foreign talent to ensure that our economy can continue to grow.”

The government has already taken a number of steps to make it easier for businesses to hire foreign workers. In 2019, the government introduced a new points-based system for assessing foreign worker applications. The system is designed to favor applicants with skills that are in high demand in Singapore.

The government has also increased the number of work visas that are available to foreign workers. In 2022, the government issued a record number of work visas to foreign workers.
