The study reveals that Moroccan garment workers now earn an average of $307 per month, or $1.61 per hour. This figure puts them ahead of other major producers like Bangladesh and Pakistan, and only trails behind industry giants China ($2.19 per hour) and Turkey ($2.38 per hour). This rise in average pay signifies a positive trend for Morocco’s garment sector, highlighting efforts to improve worker welfare and attract investment.
This is a big jump from where Morocco used to be. In the past, countries like Bangladesh and Pakistan were ahead of them in terms of pay. So, what changed?
Here are some of the reasons why Moroccan garment workers are now earning more:
- The government is helping: Morocco’s government has raised the minimum wage for garment workers and given tax breaks to garment companies. This encourages companies to pay their workers more and invest in better working conditions.
- Morocco is becoming a popular place to make clothes: More and more clothing companies are choosing to make their clothes in Morocco instead of other countries. This is because Morocco is closer to Europe and North America, so it’s cheaper to ship clothes from there.
- Moroccan workers are making higher-quality clothes: The garment industry in Morocco is moving away from making cheap, basic clothes to making more expensive, high-quality clothes. This requires more skilled workers, who can then demand higher wages.
Of course, there are still some challenges that Moroccan garment workers face:
- The cost of living is going up: Even though they’re earning more, the cost of things like food and housing is also going up in Morocco. This means that the extra money they’re making may not be enough to cover their expenses.
- Not everyone has the skills to get the high-paying jobs: The industry needs more skilled workers to make the high-quality clothes that companies are demanding. This means that the government needs to invest in training programs to help workers learn new skills.
- Other countries are also trying to pay their workers more: If Morocco wants to stay ahead of the competition, it needs to keep paying its workers more and making sure that its clothes are high-quality.
Overall, the rise in wages for Moroccan garment workers is a positive development. It shows that the government and the industry are working together to improve the lives of workers. However, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed in order to make sure that this progress continues.
