BFC’s Comprehensive DEI Report Charts a Course for Change in UK Fashion
The British Fashion Council (BFC) has joined forces with The Outsiders Perspective and The (Fashion) Minority Report to unveil this year’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Report. An insightful examination of the current state of diversity in the UK fashion industry, the report highlights the critical need for a more representative and inclusive corporate landscape, particularly at the executive level.
At the heart of this comprehensive review lies the data collected from The UK Fashion DEI Census, revealing a striking correlation between leadership diversity and overall company performance. The findings emphasize that diversifying corporate representation, particularly in executive positions, can significantly enhance the sector’s potential for growth.
Jamie Gill, Founder of The Outsiders Perspective and BFC Non-Executive Director, underscores the industry’s untapped potential, stating, “Our catwalks are diverse, our campaigns are diverse, our consumers are diverse, but our workforce and our decision-makers are not.”
The report presents a compelling business case, offering tangible levers to expedite diversity, talent recruitment, and retention. Gill emphasizes the critical importance of a diverse team, highlighting the unique relevance of diversity to the fashion industry.
Key findings from the report include the revelation that only 9% of executives and board members in the UK fashion industry are people of color, while a mere 39% are women. Moreover, a stark contrast exists in perceptions of industry diversity, with 86% of white men believing in diversity compared to only 46% of women of color.
Daniel Peters, Founder of The (Fashion) Minority Report, emphasizes the importance of a considered approach for those from underrepresented groups, stating, “Business can then benefit from their perspective and thrive.”
Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the British Fashion Council, calls the report a wake-up call for the industry. She stresses the undeniable benefits of a diverse workforce, urging brands and organizations to align their external messaging and internal practices authentically with DEI goals.
As the fashion industry stands at this crossroads, the DEI Report not only sheds light on the existing disparities but also provides a roadmap for a more inclusive and representative future, challenging the industry to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion as levers for a competitive advantage.
